The Virginia AER Barbara McCarthy Scholarship

APPLY!

The Virginia Chapter of AER offers scholarships to eligible graduate and/or undergraduate students preparing for future or continuing employment in Virginia and enrolled in an area of study that directly supports people who are blind, visually impaired, or deafblind.

  • $1000 scholarship to a student enrolled full-time (9 credits and above)
  • $500 scholarship to a student enrolled part-time (less than 9 credits)

Students who are residents of Virginia and enrolled at any U.S. college/university offering a degree in a vision-related field, or a student enrolled in the Virginia Consortium for Teacher Preparation in Vision Impairment are encouraged to apply.

The Virginia AER Barbara McCarthy Scholarship was established in 2012 to support Virginia AER’s mission to empower, encourage, and educate professionals who work in all phases of education and rehabilitation of blind and visually impaired children and adults.  Scholarship winners will also receive a one-year Virginia AER Student Membership, as well as one-day paid admission to the annual professional conference to receive their award.

Virginia AER Announces

At the annual Virginia AER Vision Conference two students were presented with the Barbara McCarthy Student Scholarship by the namesake of the scholarship, Barbara McCarthy. This scholarship was created to honor Barbara McCarthy and her dedication, commitment, and leadership within the field of education for persons with visual impairment in Virginia.  The intent of this award is to provide financial assistance to students with exemplary academic achievements and who demonstrate a high level of interest in supporting the needs of persons with visual impairments.  The Scholarship Application are available in the fall of each year.
